The Birthday we Decorated...and Almost Forgot

Everywhere I turn, I see lights. Trees dressed better than some people at church. Music jingling like joy has been mass-produced.
And yet…
Somewhere between the shopping carts, the wish lists, the sales, the selfies, the wrapping paper, and the exhaustion—
We misplaced the Person.
Not the holiday. Not the season. The Savior.
It’s wild, isn’t it?
We celebrate His birthday by making it about us.
We celebrate His arrival by drowning out His voice.
We celebrate His coming by acting like He’s optional décor.
And I don’t say this with judgment. I say it with grief.
Because Heaven didn’t send a gift card. Heaven sent a Son.
No tracking number. No return policy. No receipt.
Just blood. Just obedience. Just love wrapped in flesh.
Born in a feeding trough, not a throne room. Announced to shepherds, not celebrities. Greeted by animals before kings.
And somehow…we turned that into a mall soundtrack.
Let me be plain, because love tells the truth:
Jesus did not come so we could argue over “Happy Holidays” versus “Merry Christmas. ”He came so dead hearts could live.
He did not come to be a seasonal accessory. He came to be Lord.
He did not leave Heaven, endure earth, carry a cross, and defeat death so we could acknowledge Him once a year and ignore Him the rest.
So today, I’m not asking you to cancel Christmas. I’m asking you to re-center it.
Before the gifts—remember the Gift.
Before the parties—remember the Presence.
Before the joy you’re chasing—remember the Joy who chased you.
If all you give Him this season is a song, make it sincere. If all you give Him is a prayer, make it honest. If all you give Him is your heart—that’s the one thing He’s always wanted anyway.
And here’s the good news (because there’s always good news with Jesus):
He’s not offended by late invitations. He doesn’t sulk because He wasn’t the centerpiece at first. He just waits…with arms open…still Emmanuel—God with us.
So pause today. Breathe. Look past the glitter.
And whisper what Heaven never forgot:
“Thank You for coming.”
Because Christmas isn’t about what’s under the tree.
It’s about Who stepped into the world so we could finally come home.
In His Name
